ITANAGAR: After years of waiting by the residents, Tali, the last disconnected administrative centre and the last disconnected Assembly constituency of Arunachal Pradesh, has now been connected by road for the first time since India's independence.

On Saturday, Pema Khandu, the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, became the first chief minister to travel by road to Tali in the Kra Daadi district.

Khandu had promised the locals during his last helicopter visit in 2017 that his subsequent visit would be by road; this promise was kept on the auspicious occasion of Nyokum.

“I'm honoured to have been present for this historic and significant event, which saw the Tali ADC headquarters finally connected to the road system. Even though it was founded in 1957, Tali's administrative centre never had a road connection. We worked in mission mode to finish the 51-kilometer Yangte-Tali road as soon as possible," he remarked on Sunday while taking part in the 45th Nyokum Yullo celebrations in this city.

The 50-km PMGSY road would be finished by year's end, according to Khandu, who checked out the in-progress route from Tali to Pip Sorang, the circle headquarters of the Tali ADC administrative centre, early in the morning. "Pip Sorang will be connected by the time you all celebrate the 46th Nyokum Yullo at Tali," he declared. He urged the populace once more "not to anticipate or demand land restitution."

Khandu stated that since road connectivity will lead to general growth, if individuals offer property for free, the government is obligated to build roads wherever they are required.

Concerned about the delay in finishing the Tamen (Kamle district) to Tali road, work on which started in the late 1960s, Khandu promised that his government will also finish this route. He also acknowledged that the Yangtze-Tali road's Kumey bridge point segment needs improvement because the current alignment is too dangerous for travel.

He gave the involved officials instructions to finish the stretch as soon as possible and redo the alignment if needed. Khandu further stated that the 15-kilometer stretch of road from the Joram-Koloriang highway to Yangte is unsuitable for normal travel and promised that it will be immediately repaired.

He urged the residents of the Tali region to return to their own villages after moving to places like Ziro and Itanagar.
